That must go double for unbelievable deals like the one Amazon.com was offering on the EOS 5D cameras. Although all day yesterday Amazon listed them for $1600 (about $800 cheaper than competitors), today they have sadly returned to $2585.<br /><br />The worst part about this is I was not quick enough to order one at the $1600 price. Would they have honored it? (at least if they didn't I would get an explanation). If anyone was able to snatch up some $1600 EOS 5D's please let us hear about it! Leave some comments at the bottom of this post...<br /><br />It leaves one wondering what happened at Amazon? Was it a glitch? Did they sell out? Drop a deadbeat vendor? Whatever happened it leaves a bit of a bad taste in our mouths about the trustworthiness of Amazon.com<br /><br />This is too bad since <a href="http://webphotoresource.blogspot.com/"><span style="font-style: italic;">Photography Resource Weblog</span></a> uses Amazon.com as an advertiser on our site. We will put them on probation for now. We will keep an eye on them and of course if we find any more 5D's for $1600 we will let you know.<br /><br />We also have to wonder in light of any 5D price drop, if rumors of an imminent replacement to the EOS 5D might carry some weight.<br /><br />Currently the best deals we are aware of for the EOS 5D came from Dell.com last December. Dell lets you sign up for a monthly online newsletter, this newsletter has special pricing and coupons. Last December with the newsletter only pricing, and the coupon, on top of Dell's Christmas 20% off electronics, lucky customers were coming away with $1899 EOS 5D's</div></div><br />More info and product details on the <a href="http://astore.amazon.com/photography0f-20/detail/B0007Y791C/104-1548302-2851901">Canon EOS 5D</a><br /><br /><br />Again if anyone ordered one, or has had trouble with Amazon.com please leave comments below.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9144118070463831508.post-88338136160064535502007-07-28T01:50:00.000-07:002007-07-28T09:05:35.236-07:00Best Deal on a EOS 5D<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgABMpOb_HZ7h_yA8rNQoFbmHuFemUnC7GU-sYw9DTbvA0TiMuXexw45lQFmnbLZxYjxfP5rw6rwF7Qn6K07B8JS-zOQuhNMGwiClutMSdJkUil1yCAWWE46sLIz6JNrOZCGcU4wj0OXO0/s1600-h/5d.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgABMpOb_HZ7h_yA8rNQoFbmHuFemUnC7GU-sYw9DTbvA0TiMuXexw45lQFmnbLZxYjxfP5rw6rwF7Qn6K07B8JS-zOQuhNMGwiClutMSdJkUil1yCAWWE46sLIz6JNrOZCGcU4wj0OXO0/s400/5d.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5092170664916748322" border="0" /></a><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size:180%;"><span style="font-weight: bold;">$<span style="color: rgb(255, 0, 0);">1600</span></span></span><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size:130%;"><span style="font-weight: bold;">At Amazon.com</span></span><br /></div></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /><iframe src="http://rcm.amazon.com/e/cm?t=photography0f-20&o=1&p=8&l=as1&asins=B000O3LR5A&nou=1&fc1=000000&IS2=1&amp;amp;amp;lt1=_blank&lc1=0000FF&bc1=000000&bg1=FFFFFF&f=ifr" style="width: 120px; height: 240px;" marginwidth="0" marginheight="0" frameborder="0" scrolling="no"></iframe><br /><br /><div style="text-align: left;">This is a smoking deal on a fantastic camera. The loss of both Minolta and Konica was a bit of a blow to long time camera buffs. Both companies had a rich history of innovative cameras and world class in-house optics. Both companies had also struggled to keep pace with innovations and marketing since the beginning of the autofocus era in late 1980's.<br /><br /><span style="font-size:130%;"><span style="font-weight: bold;">Konica<br />1873-2003</span></span><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg6r5nph2e62pVsiIr_IDsEN2n6JrGauq7B6ZbARSvSy8ZI1r9PcqaWowNzNWskBaojvAtC6av1jlv1mETS5LhQpkeOsnf3tngyjuHH3S12JKgRarY1jGp6eg175kgCWgXKoIzTvnWPXJg/s1600-h/050728image005.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg6r5nph2e62pVsiIr_IDsEN2n6JrGauq7B6ZbARSvSy8ZI1r9PcqaWowNzNWskBaojvAtC6av1jlv1mETS5LhQpkeOsnf3tngyjuHH3S12JKgRarY1jGp6eg175kgCWgXKoIzTvnWPXJg/s320/050728image005.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5087715765787716962" border="0" /></a><br />Konica dropped out of the SLR business with the advent of autofocus and focused on a fantastic selection of rangefinder cameras, finishing up with the Hexar RF, an innovative rangefinder that put Leica's flagship M system on notice. The Konica RF took Leica M lenses (as well as its own excellent Hexanon lenses) and had features Leica had neglected to give the M for 20 years. Dante Stella tells the Konica RF story on his website "<a href="http://www.dantestella.com/technical/hexarrf.html">Hexar RF: The final Frontier?</a>". Sadly it looks like the Hexar RF died with Konica, but who knows, Sony is a chip & sensor powerhouse who supplies all the major digital camera makers, if the new <a href="http://webphotoresource.blogspot.com/2007/05/50-year-old-digital-camera.html">Leica M8 Digital</a> is a success who knows what we may see from Sony.<br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;font-size:130%;" >Minolta<br />1928-2003<br /></span>Minolta was a autofocus innovator and brought to market the first autofocus SLR beating competitors Nikon and Canon by several months. Although Minolta had quite a bit of success with its Maxxum AF line it choose never to develop a professional model, however it did create one for Leica, the R system, modeled after a pre-af Minolta camera chassis. With the advent of digital Minolta made a conscious decision to make the transition and to develop a semi-professional digital SLR. The Minolta 5D & 7D was the result, innovative cameras to bring Minolta strongly into the new century. Unfortunately after releasing the 7D it did not look like Minolta would follow soon with a Pro model capable of the robustness and features found in the models from Canon and Nikon. It looked like Minolta was going to repeat the same path it had with autofocus relegating it to a bottom feeder in the SLR world.<br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;font-size:130%;" >Hello Sony....</span><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">Est. 1958</span><br />In march 2006 Sony Inc. purchased the camera division of the floundering Konica-Minolta Corp. Sony had never made an SLR camera but they had power and money, not to mention momentum that Konica-Minolta sorely lacked. Sony quickly announced they would re-design the Minolta 7D and rename it the Sony Alpha. The same name Minolta used in Japan for its Maxxum cameras.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhbA1rF9ZVcWu23G8PBj_tbz12kFaJLN5txaz7NGvP49QjDdzWmrziG2N-ZJwPnzOjKOZWBSTFMHm0qL422zPsF6_mNfVfQ7AVVKRwXMVeAv7RqhoqQ17CkwFGlYFtYS_9rgkkD2ev2tWo/s1600-h/DSLR-A100B_with_Lens_Group_2_lg.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhbA1rF9ZVcWu23G8PBj_tbz12kFaJLN5txaz7NGvP49QjDdzWmrziG2N-ZJwPnzOjKOZWBSTFMHm0qL422zPsF6_mNfVfQ7AVVKRwXMVeAv7RqhoqQ17CkwFGlYFtYS_9rgkkD2ev2tWo/s400/DSLR-A100B_with_Lens_Group_2_lg.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5087716457277451634" border="0" /></a>The Sony Alpha A100 is an updated Minolta MaxxumD with full use of all previous Minolta Maxxum and Rokkor lenses. It is still not robust or feature laden enough to be considered a Professional camera but it is superior to most entry level DSLR's and has a foundation of lenses that are certainly professional quality.<br /><br /><span style="font-size:130%;"><span style="font-weight: bold;">The big question for the moment is where will Sony take things from here?</span></span><br />2 new Alpha models are expected to be released within the next 12 months. As well as several new pro lenses. Speculation has been that Sony will be releasing a full frame sensor Professional Alpha camera. This is big news if it turns out to be true. Hopefully Sony will be able to accomplish what has eluded Konica, Minolta, and many others for a long time....Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9144118070463831508.post-74403561754314895322007-07-13T23:54:00.000-07:002007-07-14T00:34:30.132-07:00Free Pop-Photo Subscription<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://www.freebizmag.com/brpopphoto01welcome.htm"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhkgXFkfGp4ASOVTrq1Qr6-R6duZl_GQrKQ2NUTM8G7t46Gfx5m45BTTR3KjkfzbCTqhgNdsfEqtm0wIrDflR9zAAwYRg5cB4G2LwmJYb0JP3fdlnyHk3UR8oG_tXdgltFU2rAwKUYTa5I/s400/freePop-Photo.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5086949599456683778" border="0" /></a><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-weight: bold;font-size:180%;" >Freebizmag.com currently offering FREE</span><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;font-size:180%;" ><span style="font-style: italic;">Popular Photography</span> Subscriptions</span><br /></div><br />Here is the link: <a href="http://www.freebizmag.com/brpopphoto01welcome.htm">www.freebizmag.com/brpopphoto01welcome.htm</a><br /><br />This is not a scam (no money is involved) but you do need to provide freebizmag.com some personal information, which they will no doubt share with marketers likely resulting in increased spam and junk mail. Nikon has reportedly come close to releasing the camera at least twice, but has pulled it back for "re-tuning minor items" or perhaps a major overhaul.<br /><br /> The latest word is we can expect an official announcement sometime during summer 2007. A re-tuning might be a good sign that Nikon wants to do things right with this camera, especially considering the trouble Canon is in with some who feel they released the EOS 1D Mark III with autofocus issues. The Nikon partnership/merger with Sinar that was talked about in 2006 seems to have gone nowhere since it was announced although it is possible Nikon is holding back on releasing any big news until the D3 is ready.<br /><br /> When that will occur is anyones guess, however current predictions suggest a big announcement to coincide with Nikon's celebration of 90 years of making camera equipment on July 25th.<br /><br /> As for those of us anxiously awaiting news of the mythical Nikon D3 we can track the announcements, leaks and outright rumors reguarding the history of the D3 on the Photography Bay Blog, <a href="http://www.photographybay.com/2007/05/01/a-history-of-the-nikon-d3/">A History of the Nikon D3</a><br /><br />Current hinted at specks for the Nikon D3...<br /><ul><li><span style=";font-family:Verdana,Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;font-size:85%;" >Modular body (interchangeable finder, back, and storage modules); the body is the host camera brains and control system, power source, lens mount, mirror box, shutter, and support system while everything else gets added on:</span> </li><li><span style=";font-family:Verdana,Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;font-size:85%;" >10-12mp APS High Speed Back (10 fps DX crop, 12 fps HS crop)</span> </li><li><span style=";font-family:Verdana,Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;font-size:85%;" >24mm FF Low Speed Back (3 fps FF, 5 fps DX crop)</span> </li><li><span style=";font-family:Verdana,Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;font-size:85%;" >12mp Black and White Back </span></li><li><span style=";font-family:Verdana,Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;font-size:85%;" >Prism finder with real time displays (e.g. histograms)</span> </li><li><span style=";font-family:Verdana,Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;font-size:85%;" >Card storage module (2x CompactFlash or 2x SecureDigital)</span> </li><li><span style=";font-family:Verdana,Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;font-size:85%;" >Drive storage module (40, 80, 120GB hard drive)</span> </li><li><span style=";font-family:Verdana,Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;font-size:85%;" >Wireless module (1x CompactFlash for backup, WiFi)</span> </li></ul>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9144118070463831508.post-6034715583400541902007-06-25T22:25:00.000-07:002007-06-27T00:17:11.917-07:00Canon launches world’s fastest digital camera<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiebnKpVJqZg3nwJPxyGsLXEC_5nAM2i1LVoNHhp8E1HamLLW1ycYIX7BQdW5U5AaGnVO25g-eDEmy77Pmf1Icno-YFTvNi12jW607TWVj4t5BvNe15Y6mtL2cf9PJOsfZqP_eAInAJPjU/s1600-h/eos_1d_mark-3_beauty_02.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiebnKpVJqZg3nwJPxyGsLXEC_5nAM2i1LVoNHhp8E1HamLLW1ycYIX7BQdW5U5AaGnVO25g-eDEmy77Pmf1Icno-YFTvNi12jW607TWVj4t5BvNe15Y6mtL2cf9PJOsfZqP_eAInAJPjU/s400/eos_1d_mark-3_beauty_02.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5080258335054571890" border="0" /></a><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size:180%;"><span style="font-weight: bold;">Canon's New Flagship Camera</span></span><br /></div><p style="text-align: center; font-weight: bold;" class="Pressreleasecaption"><span style="font-size:180%;">EOS 1D Mark III</span></p>It may have a funny name but the <a href="http://astore.amazon.com/photography0f-20/detail/B000NP1C5O/104-1548302-2851901">Canon EOS 1D Mark III </a>is designed to kick ass and take names... er photos! By convention, "f/#" is treated as a single symbol, and specific values of f/# are written by replacing the number sign with the value. For example, if the focal length is 16 times the pupil diameter, the f-number is f/16, or N = 16. The greater the f-number, the less light per unit area reaches the image plane.</p> <p class="MsoNormal">The literal interpretation of the f/N notation for f-number N is as an arithmetic expression for the effective aperture diameter (input pupil diameter), the focal length divided by the f-number: D = f / N.</p> <p class="MsoNormal"><o:p> </o:p></p> <p class="MsoNormal">Apparently Optical Engineers Sutton and Dawson defined the f-stop in 1867, and was adopted by lens manufactures soon afterward. Although apparently the f expression was unanimously adopted by lens makers the numbering scale was not. By 1901 there were at least 5 separate numerical scales used to denote the f-stop.</p> <p>By 1920, the term <i>f-number</i> appeared in books both as <i>F number</i> and <i>f/number</i>. In modern publications, the forms <i>f-number</i> and <i>f number</i> are more common, though the earlier forms, as well as <i>F-number</i> are still found in a few books; not uncommonly, the initial lower-case <i>f</i> in <i>f-number</i> or <i>f/number</i> is set as the hooked italic <i>f</i> as in <i><span style="font-family:Georgia;">f/</span>#</i>.<sup> </sup>Notations for f-numbers were also quite variable in the early part of the twentieth century. They were sometimes written with a capital F, sometimes with a dot (period) instead of a slash, and sometimes set as a vertical fraction.</p> <p>Although by the 1940’s most of the world had settled with the current f-stop scale we use today it wasn’t until 1961 that the ASA created the f-stop as an official standard. PH2.12-1961 <i>American Standard General-Purpose Photographic Exposure Meters (Photoelectric Type)</i> specifies that "The symbol for relative apertures shall be <i><span style="font-family:Georgia;">f/</span></i> or <i><span style="font-family:Georgia;">f</span></i> : followed by the effective <i><span style="font-family:Georgia;">f</span></i>-number." Note that they show the hooked italic <i><span style="font-family:Georgia;">f</span></i> not only in the symbol, but also in the term <i>f-number</i>, which today is more commonly set in an ordinary non-italic face.</p>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9144118070463831508.post-69791624176298608962007-05-30T12:23:00.001-07:002007-05-30T12:39:35.985-07:00Update: Oldest & most expensive camera of all time...<div style="text-align: center;"><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh8g-Wia4zSbxBqRkcqVyDYFndp6tYz_sOo7izF4Ncv1-wIACQSyL2lK0Hh2fRjBAoYPmvcNjkkSdJa4uzIJ6dDVfFjmSPuMrQnF3CrocrpyXoVOrnQzGnbkrKz9NLM-ESeblZS_eA9TLQ/s1600-h/oldest+camera.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh8g-Wia4zSbxBqRkcqVyDYFndp6tYz_sOo7izF4Ncv1-wIACQSyL2lK0Hh2fRjBAoYPmvcNjkkSdJa4uzIJ6dDVfFjmSPuMrQnF3CrocrpyXoVOrnQzGnbkrKz9NLM-ESeblZS_eA9TLQ/s400/oldest+camera.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5070436617116556018" border="0" /></a><span style="font-size:130%;"><span style="font-weight: bold;">Original Daguerreotype</span></span><br /><span style="font-weight: bold; color: rgb(255, 0, 0);"> <span style="font-size:180%;">SOLD</span></span><span style="font-size:180%;"><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">$792,000</span></span></div> <p><st1:city st="on">VIENNA</st1:city> (AFP) - An 1839 daguerreotype camera, ancestor of modern photography, was sold at auction in <st1:city st="on"><st1:place st="on">Vienna</st1:place></st1:city> Saturday for nearly 600,000 euros making it the world's oldest and most expensive commercial photographic apparatus. </p> <p>An anonymous buyer paid 588,613 euros (792,000 dollars), bidding by Internet, said the Westlicht auction house.</p><p><a href="http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20070526/lf_afp/austriadaguerreotype_070526212150">Yahoo News Storry...</a></p>Original Post:<br /><a href="http://webphotoresource.blogspot.com/2007/05/original-daguerreotype-for-sale.html"><span style="font-weight: bold;">Oldest & most expensive camera of all time</span></a><br /><br /><p><br /></p>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9144118070463831508.post-36308575209957382752007-05-30T11:58:00.000-07:002007-05-30T12:54:12.635-07:00Look out Barbie...<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj8-YUnHmifDWJ3X1LvhfA4HxNDR2p1qtW2UO4Jvbzyzn_SJc6A8A2FyDJXC4JO7obuTK7Qs67gwDhdZpNoGA0jP_O0mIAtce3Cm1P1j2ZeEn5bc9y_JULjQXr8lchj1rsAzphpVvUYXw8/s1600-h/13_high_pass.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj8-YUnHmifDWJ3X1LvhfA4HxNDR2p1qtW2UO4Jvbzyzn_SJc6A8A2FyDJXC4JO7obuTK7Qs67gwDhdZpNoGA0jP_O0mIAtce3Cm1P1j2ZeEn5bc9y_JULjQXr8lchj1rsAzphpVvUYXw8/s400/13_high_pass.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5070433490380364514" border="0" /></a><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size:130%;"><span style="font-weight: bold;">Super Airbrush Post-Processing Tutorial</span></span><br /></div><br />Dan Chips aka: Munzo at POTN Forums has put together a fine tutorial on airbrushing portraits in Photoshop. I thought I would put this tutorial together, as it seems every time I post an image that I have processed in this way, everyone wants to know how I did it. The plate would have to be used within an hour.<br />- Exposing to light - between 10 and 20 minutes, depending upon the light available.<br />- Developing the plate over mercury heated to 75 degrees Centigrade. This caused the mercury to amalgamate with the silver.<br />- Fixing the image in a warm solution of common salt (later sodium sulphite was used.<br />- Rinsing the plate in hot distilled water.<br /> <p align="left">A site dedicated exclusively to Daguerre is <a href="http://www.daguerre.org/"><u>http://www.daguerre.org</u></a><br />Interestingly enough, there are enthusiasts who still produce dagerreotypes. See <a href="http://photographs.danforthsource.com/">here</a>.</p><span style="font-weight: bold;">The origins of commercial photography,</span> <span style="font-weight: bold;">previously no camera by this manufacturer was known to even exist!<br /><br /></span>Up till the present "The Daguerreotype" produced (also in 1839) by Daguerre’ s brother-in-law, Giroux had been regarded as the origins of commercial photography. There are around ten of these in existence in various large museums. But even earlier, on the 5th September 1839, a small Susse Frères advertisement appeared in the French newspaper “La Quotidienne” though except for a few instructions (e.g. in the George Eastman House in Rochester) no camera by this manufacturer was known to exist. This world sensation is now being exhibited in <a href="http://www.westlicht.com/index.php?lang=5">WestLicht</a> and bids will be invited at the commencement of the 11th Photographica Auction on May 26, 2007 at the symbolic starting price of 100,000 Euros. Experts assume that during the course of the auction it will become not only the oldest but the most expensive camera of all time. The camera with the original lens by Chevallier is in wonderful original condition and has never been restored or modified.<p align="left"></p><br /><p align="center">UPDATE:</p><p align="center"><a href="http://webphotoresource.blogspot.com/2007/05/update-oldest-most-expensive-camera-of.html"><span style="font-size:85%;"><span style="font-size: 130%;"><span style="font-weight: bold;">Original Daguerreotype</span></span><br /><span style="font-weight: bold; color: rgb(255, 0, 0);"> <span style="font-size: 180%;">SOLD</span></span><span style="font-size: 180%;"><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">$792,000</span></span></span></a> </p>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com8tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9144118070463831508.post-40547876915329264472007-05-11T00:28:00.000-07:002007-05-11T15:43:24.486-07:00Free Lens Hoods...<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiVJDwUsyyf6rlL0PRnR5ctBDPUiumgBRLfW9fqEukVekG9pAvunX0rzHUuXv4Z-hVQ6Yu3sWZQezUskQSyR_xz6lOuh45XIgdzyudQs8qcW5zcHrCHRYPhDNeaet-NZBUoxWq3COpMwpY/s1600-h/hood_diagram.gif"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiVJDwUsyyf6rlL0PRnR5ctBDPUiumgBRLfW9fqEukVekG9pAvunX0rzHUuXv4Z-hVQ6Yu3sWZQezUskQSyR_xz6lOuh45XIgdzyudQs8qcW5zcHrCHRYPhDNeaet-NZBUoxWq3COpMwpY/s200/hood_diagram.gif" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5063241758435795762" border="0" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgahvJxhTINpRkKKvmDC27k_MS9P4Z-0zfyAsZVTcAS3knAUudd6Kl3Wi7YdO7OI7fL-JmGjdMgAcgSFzuydvCIvD_0SmTFWiBBAj8QVJqgRQl5E0iYdZ2hSYrHFoxViKuPJtzfGmMF7jM/s1600-h/hood1.gif"><img style="cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgahvJxhTINpRkKKvmDC27k_MS9P4Z-0zfyAsZVTcAS3knAUudd6Kl3Wi7YdO7OI7fL-JmGjdMgAcgSFzuydvCIvD_0SmTFWiBBAj8QVJqgRQl5E0iYdZ2hSYrHFoxViKuPJtzfGmMF7jM/s200/hood1.gif" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5063242119213048658" border="0" /></a><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgunSbQqd-qZahYyGStoJBQTMnN6X4zCDlICc8tU58KMWH0QI9QqcJq2tO43Vkm9hxbWDVriV3lUOrU8faXX56RwotQkUZeM8t1GF1dz5OArEnc-oB1VwOivDOKTEIVoi5x9qRtDJ1avwg/s1600-h/example-hood.png"><img style="cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgunSbQqd-qZahYyGStoJBQTMnN6X4zCDlICc8tU58KMWH0QI9QqcJq2tO43Vkm9hxbWDVriV3lUOrU8faXX56RwotQkUZeM8t1GF1dz5OArEnc-oB1VwOivDOKTEIVoi5x9qRtDJ1avwg/s320/example-hood.png" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5063241500737757986" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size:130%;">Printable PDF documents to make your own lens hoods, Calculate your own hood in the field! & Plastic Bottle hoods too!</span></div><br />Lets face it many of us go without lens hoods when in fact they are one of the most important ways we can go about improving our photographs. The purpose of a lens hood is to prevent <a href="http://www.vanwalree.com/optics/flare.html">flare</a>, which can seriously degrade the image quality of photographic lenses. This being said it is often the case that we do not get a lens hood when we purchase the lens, or often in my particular case, the size of the lens hood means it often gets left at home rather than on the camera.<br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">Cut along the dotted line...<br /><br /></span>The folks at <a href="http://www.lenshoods.co.uk/">www.lenshoods.co.uk</a> have completly and utterly obliterated any more lame excuses why the rest of us don't use a lens hood. First off they offer them for free! You hear that Canon & Nikon, and anyone else who charges upwards of $100 for a piece of round plastic. Second they are made from paper so size is no longer an issue, they will simply fold right up. These guys provide hoods in Adobe PDF files for most major manufactures (<a href="http://www.lenshoods.co.uk/canon.php">Canon, </a><a href="http://www.lenshoods.co.uk/nikon.php">Nikon, </a><a href="http://www.lenshoods.co.uk/olympus.php">Olympus, </a><a href="http://www.lenshoods.co.uk/pentax.php">Pentax)</a> and third party lens companies (<a href="http://www.lenshoods.co.uk/sigma.php">Sigma, </a><a href="http://www.lenshoods.co.uk/tamron.php">Tamron, </a><a href="http://www.lenshoods.co.uk/tokina.php">Tokina</a>) too. They also provide a service that lets you design your own. These guys even go farther than your manafactur often does, and offer conventional round hoods as well as tulip petal-shaped lens hoods with curved cutout notches. This tulip petal design maximizes the amount of hood coverage for the minimum amount of weight and hood area. Tulip-shaped hoods cannot be used on lenses with rotating ends though, because perfect hoods must be aligned to the sensor frame dimensions.<br /><br />RegularJen blogged about how she was able to use the PDF lenshoods as templates to cut ones from black art foam: <span style="font-size:100%;"><a href="http://www.regularjen.com/archives/2007/03/08/lens-hoods-on-the-cheap-with-bonus-conversation/" rel="bookmark" title="Permanent Link: lens hoods on the cheap with bonus conversation">lens hoods on the cheap with bonus conversation.</a></span><br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">Don't forget to Recycle...</span><br /><br />Another great source for lens hoods is found in every day items around the house, namely plastic bottles. <span class="GramE"><br /></span><div style="text-align: center;"><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEivRxiW6HRMLyPhBxcPEYCUPVplwOqHRy4VvpabXcpKZpm2IBMwknSGDKP_MRNFf76eOqbF0ccCOFDIaz2ng0hty-04Z_ZU2vXemIU5-5wDnZ92z6lHCqzCJrkcKx9KvzxWXc_AUUvJTAc/s1600-h/hood1.gif"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px;
